Final individual projects

final project

fun project

Objectives revisited

After reviewing the objectives. I thought we accomplished all we set out to learn. We defined Web2.0 and explored the history and future. Before I began this class, I thought I already had  knowledge of Social media. I never imagined how much was out there. Sure I used Skype, facebook, twitter, ect.... the most popular ones. But it was exciting to discover the one I had never heard of . we have made this semester and how I can incorporate them for future use. In researching for our projects, I found more Web2.0 sites. I am going to put those a google document so I can explore when I have more time.

project ideas

So I missed the deadline for this creative video  but I think this would have been fun......

Projects

Fun Group Project- Pictionary was fun....I had a blast both times I played online. I think video would have been kool, not that I like to be on video. It would be great to have a program that would have the capability to hold a table sidebar with individual videos of all the participants. Like they do pictures or avatars....that way it would not take up so much space. I tried to record the trail and the group version in camtasia, but even after editing, I am having trouble publishing it as a video. After about half way through, my computer just shuts down. Of course it could be because they are at least 20 minutes long. Camtasia did a good job and I had it to zoom in on some areas. Then I forgot that if followed my mouse so,some of the drawings were not shown all the way. It recorded audio, but only my voice because of the earphones. We tried without, but the feedback from the speakers was to loud. We used Elluiminate in the trail, and skype for the audio because the sound was just better. It had a built in timer, but would only let you have one slide in the trail version. We could not show the board and have enough space to draw. We used Vyew for the final version. We had to use skype because it would let more than 3 chat at one time. We used diceroller with a password so everyone could see the same pair of dice. Later Brad found out that Vyew had some plug-ins available and one of them was some dice. I really like that program as a collaboration tool except for only allowing 3 to chat at any one time.

I have had the hardest time getting camtasia to publish a video.....My computer kept shutting off

Not the best video but gives you an idea My version

Group Project

So I am late about posting ideas....okay so we are working on a Web 2.0 course to use outside of moodle. We are following DIs format but changing up a few things. One being a head start on projects that will allow the students to work through-out the course on the final projects.

My project is what to included in an online portfolio.

My fun project is ??????????   I guess it will be a last minute idea.....guess that's the fun part LoL

Private Universe Theory, and Teaching Follow-up

Earth, Moon and Sun Unit Study Guide

What causes the four seasons we experience?
THE TILT OF EARTH ON ITS AXIS
My answer
The seasons change because of the distance from the earth's surface to the sun in relation to the tilt of the earth as it orbits around the sun.
Okay so I took you around the world to answer it but i did get it right

Explain why we have lunar phases each month?
WE HAVE PHASES BECAUSE THE MOON IS REVOLVING AROUND THE EARTH AND WE SEE DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF REFLECTED SUNLIGHT
The moon orbits around the earth so the phases of the moon is determined to when the earth is closest to the sun.
I had no idea and was guessing. I remembered seeing a picture in a text book but that's about it for the moon.

I found the Ideas That Block Learning  interesting. I think we all have some kind of preconceived ideas about different things. The question is ..What do we do when we are confronted with answers that are different from our ideas. Do we keep our ideas until we are forced to explain them to someone else; then learn from our mistakes. I was embarrassed that I didn't know the answer. Now I question...What other things do I think I no that are incorrect?   In my defense, I would have looked it up on the internet If DI had not said we couldn't. I look up every thing on the internet.....sometimes even when I think I have the answer and I just want to make sure.

As far as educators in the US and Globally, I think the new generation of students need extra stimulation in order to learn. Simulations, videos, audios, and social interaction have become an important part of their life, so education should incorporate this media into the curriculum.

Bringing Worlds together

I have been at the coast for about 1.1/2 years and the only people I know are my nephew and niece who are the same age as my oldest son. I was feeling lonely, So I went on an online dating site called plentyoffish.com. I met a nice man, Danny Garris who lives about 35 miles in New Bern NC. We chatted online a couple of times and then on the phone. We shared facebook accounts. And after about a month he asked me out. We went to a great Mexican restaurant. I had a really nice time. We have been out a few times. Even though we don't have much in common, I did find a new friend who lives close by.

CouchSurfing

This social media site gets you to step out of your comfort zone by physically meeting people from other areas. Talk about collaborating global... this is certainly the opportunity to explore that option. I like the way you could meet for coffee or something without having strange people in your home. That way you could at least meet them before inviting them in. If I ever have a free moment, I would like to contact some people in my area. I am new to the eastern coast and think that would be a great way to meet new people and get a "locals" inside view.

I haven't decided what to put onMy profile. I am cautions because I am a single mom with 3 kids at home with me. And I think this site requires you to get a little more personal so you don't creep anybody out......which is a good thing for safety reasons.

I think it would be a great way for a single person to travel the country and discover themselves and the world around them.

If only I were 20 something and single.......

embeding pictures

The beach pictures across the top are also from Picasa inserted as a gadget

embeding

I didnt have any difficulty embeding content to the the different sites. It is really just cut and paste :)

License.

Creative Commons helps you publish your work online while letting others know exactly what they can and can't do with your work. There are 6 types of licenses

Attribution cc
This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.

Attribution Share Alike cc by-sa
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Attribution No Derivatives
cc by-nd
This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.

Attribution Non-Commercial cc by-nc
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial

Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike
cc by-nc-sa
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work.

Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives
cc by-nc-nd
This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the “free advertising” license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

I guess it would depend on what I created and the reason behind it which license I would choose but I would certainly go to Creative Commons to make my decision

I was looking for a picture and was surprised to find flickr had a group of photos and listed what licenses they were registered under...that was so kool.
I got this picture off of photobucket...I think people post their works for with no restrictions to get recognized and just for the love or creating and sharing art:)

Ohhh nooo I don't want to go!!!!!!

Wkimedia

I was surprised to learn that Wikipedia had other online collaborative wiki projects such as Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikispecies, Wikinews, Wikiversity, Wikimedia Incubator and Meta-Wiki. All of the projects provides content for educational purposes.

I chose Wikibooks and Wikiquotes to look at a little closer. The content is available to freely distributable and reproduce. I think these two are great resources to use as an educator. Students will not have to worry about getting permissions to use the content and can focus on their research.

I like to use quotes to inspire my readers. Wikiquotes are categorized in several ways including; people, films, proverbs, themes, holidays and lists. This makes it easy to find the right quote to back up the idea or expression you want to convey.

Linking tools

I like being able to go to one of my sites and just clicking on any of the other sites I created. I mostly just copied and pasted. Picasa was the easiest to link because it just asked I wanted to add the other sites. It also helps me to keep all of my tools in one spot or several in this case :)

Igoogle does this for some of the links just not all of them.

Youtube

I like youtube... not necessarily to post myself. But I did find it to be very easy to upload a file. I even had fun creating this project for another class. Youtube is an excellent way to be creative, express your opinions, entertain and teach. There is even

you are able to find anything from homemade how to videos to pirated dvd movies....As far as I can tell there is no censorship or monitoring activity except for the tracking of how many views a video gets.

Chirbit

This audio sharing was okay...It didn't have a great way to update your profile...but you could link it to twitter and facebook.

I uploaded a sound file. You could hear steady hum of the fan from my computer so I must of had some technical difficulty from my microphone....

anyway my sound bite

Picasa

I already had a Picasa. I didn't know you could add other links to your profile...that was easy.....I really need to add more of my photos before my system crashes....but that is on the to do list....

My reflections

My thoughts of this class so far…..I am overwhelmed!!!!....The work is not hard…just time consuming……Not to mention all the great tools and sites we have been exploring.
The CMSimple is easy to work in and a wide variety of templates to suit anybody’s taste. I think I could use this application to help students with their first web site. As far as creating videos…I had an extremely hard time getting that done. Not because it was hard to do or upload….that was the easy part. It was more reviewing myself….I guess the worst critic is yourself. I can safely say I have no aspirations to go to Hollywood and see myself on the big screen..lol…Blogging is new for me…..This semester I have been having a hard time writing down my thoughts. I am not sure why anybody would want to read my thoughts…but it does make for a good journal and a way to go back and revisit the material you have written about. In the position listing, I didn’t realize how vague I had described the position until I had read some of the other posts. After thinking about it, if you don’t be specific, the task of sifting through all of the applicants could be time consuming as well as discouraging.
The google image labeler was kool. Here is something similar. I liked the concept. I wished I could think of a way to get my housework done for free. Maybe I could turn it into a game and get the kids to do it for me…..Second life was a trip….I’ve never been much of a navigator and in a virtual world it was no different. I ended in some world where they were talking in Japanese. It was a good thing I met Alana the first time I got on and she transported me to our class meeting. It was awesome to sit around a table just like a real classroom. But even with DIs instructions getting use to flying was difficult. I was so embarrassed that I got on the roller coaster and left the rest of the class…..I don’t even like roller coasters (even in the virtual world..lol) and I wanted off just as soon as I got on. The thing wouldn’t stop so I figured out how to stand and jump off…I would have been killed on a real one…..I did make it back, but I didn’t like that I couldn’t hear the conversation and I just heard music….I would liked to have cut the music off. I think when I get the chance to spend more time I will learn to love SL and especially meeting and learning from other people. Well I struggled with Wikipedia, wiktionary and wikiersity. I don’t have enough self confidence to project my thoughts on what others have added. I did think it was kool how you could go in and edit…to be an author …. To add material for the benefit of others…. I think I post plog to our definitions (a political blog)…only to come back later to find that it was a made up word..lol…I should of done a little more research on the word…I did get it off of wikionary….Goes to show that not everybody knows what they are doing and someone does monitor the site for discrepancies and accuracy.

Overall, I am having a blast in this class…..still overwhelmed by the assignments and all of the tools out there…but learning so much….. I look forward to getting caught up and learning so so much more 

My thoughts on Wesch

As I viewed Wesch video I thought about how much education has changed in the last 20 years. And how much technology has become a crucial part of everyday lives. Something that stuck out in my mind is the jobs of the future has not been created yet; So how do you prepare students for the future especially since a majority of educators do not have the 21st century skills of today. A website for 21st Century Learning.

The way students learn and interact with others has also changed in 20 years. We use to sit quietly and listen to the teacher and not really expected to challenge what we were learning or talk about it with other students. With students of today, social interaction and communication is a vital part of their life. Texting, twitting, facebook, my space and youtube are all outlets for the kids of today to express their thoughts and feelings. I think as educators we need to take advantage of this social media. Make these tools a new learning environment and go beyond the traditional teaching methods.

I came across this website and was really impressed with what it said about the future of learning.....I wanted to share what it said the keys to the future of education

1. It’s PERSONAL: where information and learning programs can be personalized and tailored to your own passions, talents, interests and needs. And where you
can share your own talents and skills with millions—for both fun and income.
2. It’s INTERACTIVE: with new digital platforms and templates to make it easy,
simple and fun to learn by doing, playing, creating, producing and interacting—a new
world of creative experiences.
3. It’s GLOBAL: the ever-expanding world-wide Internet owned by no one, used
by everyone; where the combined knowledge of humankind is now available to virtually
all at the tap of a digital keyboard or a touch screen.
4. It’s INSTANT: for the fi rst time in history, the ability to learn anything “just in
time”, when you need it, as you need it, at your request, and in your own way.
5. It’s MAINLY FREE: or nearly so—one low-cost click-at-a-time. The World
Wide Web, browsers, search engines and digital platforms make it easy to access
much information free, and to download other information for a few cents. Even free
international phonecalls.
6. It’s EASILY SHARED: the new world of collaborative networks to share your
abilities with anyone, anywhere. To store—free online and on community websites—
your family photographs, videos, music and even your digital multimedia portfolios
to demonstrate what you know and what you can do.
7. It’s CO-CREATIVE: if we can dream it, we can now do it—together with millions
around the world. Now we can merge our own talents into multi-talented global
teams, to produce new innovative answers to major global problems.
These seven keys have already unlocked new doors to transform industries, countries,
communities, commerce, communications and companies. They have the power
to reinvent every aspect of lifelong learning, teaching and schooling. But when these
“tipping points” link with other sweeping changes, the impact will be even greater:

Delicious

I like being able to go a different computer and go to my favorite sites. I also like the hot list and the search feature on Delicious I can quickly glance at some of the links people are bookmarking and I can also search for my interest as well. Helps save time in searching through hundreds of pages on the internet.

My bookmarks

I signed up for digg it too. but I haven't explored it enough

wikipedia

Editing wikipedia, wikiversity and wiktionary was a little intimidating for me. I worried about messing something up. I thought it was kool that I could go in and put down my thoughts and opinions. It was nice to know that someone was monitoring it though, I got a message in the wiktionary that my input should only be to define the term and not explain it that was for wikipedia...

I added My profile...that was interesting.

Anyway I am not a writer, but it was fun trying to be.....

Second Life

My first go at second life was a little difficult to navigate but I think with more practice I will get the hang of it. I can see where you could use Second Life for a great interactive learning environment. You could mirror parts of the real world and set up training environments that resemble a classroom setting at a fraction of the cost. Plus being able to collaborate with all kinds of people around the world is an added bonus.

On the down side I can easily get frustrated navigating around in the worlds(getting Lost) and the lag-time and music disrupts lectures making it hard to hear as well as missing parts of the discussions.

creating logos

I went to cooltext.com to create the logo....Most websites want you to pay...this one is free. It has lots of options as to text font and color. It was fast and easy to create.

Google Lableler

The video on Human-based computation reminded me of Huckleberry Finn getting someone else to do his chores. Thinking outside the box is a creative way of getting things done; especially when you figure a way to do it that doesn't cost you anything. The gaming idea is a brilliant concept; 27 million people play games online and to be able to tap into that market and get free labor is good business.

For the game itself, I think a person could improve their brain functions as it makes you try to remember words to associate the images with. For students the game is a way to increase vocabulary, spelling, cognitive and critical thinking skills. In web development,a designer could get ideas for tags to promote more hits to their site.

Wordle

"Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide." I would rather use the word tool.I think when you want to get your idea across in a graphic wordle is a great tool to help you express your thoughts. A pictures worth a thousand words....This tool lets uses words to make a picture.

I created 3 wordles..One from this blog because I wanted to see what it would do. The next one from my profile description. The last one took a little more thought because I wanted to words to describe who I wanted to become but still include who I still am.

video

video is becoming a really popular media outlet. I do enjoy watching them. I think you gain a lot of insight into the person making the video or the content being covered. Video can be quite entertaining too. I am amazed how people can just put them self out there...make a complete fool out of them selves...and be comfortable posting it for the world to see.

I have come to the conclusion that these people have no self- esteem issues, they don't care what others think, don't mind laughing at themselves and/or enjoy the lime-light/attention.

As for me I have all the problems above...so even posting an introductory video is very hard for me. I tried 6 different times and every time found something wrong with it, deleted and tried to start over. I have now decided I will not even look at it..just put it up....mistakes and all

Sept 13

This past week has been really busy. Family has came down for a vacation and stayed with me. I am taking three classes at ASU. I have three different sites to check for assignments/other stuff. I am learning about a lot of new technology and other interesting websites. I find I can get easily side tracked as I engage myself in all the resources available. I spend hours "working" on homework but it seems I never get caught up. I still need to do my video...I have tried it about 5 or 6 times but I always find something wrong with it; my voice is too soft, my hair is in my face, stuttering or just a loss of words.....I think I wont even review so I can get it turned in.

On another note I got a position teaching part-time at Con-Ed at Carteret Community College....I think I need to go on a diet...my plate is just getting to full..lol

Its nice to be prepared for a hurricane. I had to evacuate the Island and find another place to stay or the night....There is no place like home......Safe is better than being inconvenienced....just behind on everything....
Okay...time to get busy....
